Quotes from Western Albemarle Head Coach Ellen Markowitz:
“I am so proud of our team. Everyone played their best and were so tough out there. There was unbelievable tennis from Austin Winslow first off the court yet again, and Sarah Randolph [Warren] and Jenny [Little] finishing strong. Stephanie Hass shut down a very good player in Carly Hargroves after a 7-5 set. Every match was a beauty and they grabbed this one and didn’t let go.
“We were expecting and ready to fight for hours if we had to. Abingdon are an experienced team and have great players and coaches. We beat them last year in a long one in the quarterfinals, so we know how good they are.
“Credit to our players for being focused, confident and willing to hit lots of balls. Each round of states gets tougher, and the stakes get higher, but we stay grounded and the ones out on the court know that their teammates are behind them, cheering and supporting them no matter what happens.
“Pressure is a privilege and we are embracing it. We are so happy to be moving on and are excited for Saturday.
“It’s who you become in the journey chasing a title, and we are so proud of who they are as people, and what they are learning from this experience this year.”
Western Albemarle Season Record: 20-1, Jefferson District Champions, Region 3C Champions
