The Western Albemarle High School girls’ basketball program is hosting its 3rd Annual “Play For Preemies Showcase” on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019. The event’s goal is to raise awareness and funds for premature birth at the UVA Children’s Hospital in Charlottesville and Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital in Roanoke.
Western Albemarle girls' basketball coach Kris Wright and his wife Heather’s children were born premature. That prompted the WAHS girls’ basketball program to begin the “Play For Preemies Showcase” in 2016. In the first two years of this showcase event, the program donated more than $6,500 to the hospitals.
This year, the showcase features 12 teams. All will be in action at Western Albemarle High School on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019. The 12 schools playing in the six games are:
Battlefield, Broadway, Colonial Forge, Covington, Fort Defiance, Forest Park, Louisa County, Stuarts Draft, Waynesboro, Western Albemarle, William Monroe, Wilson Memorial
If a business or individuals would like to support the showcase as a sponsor or as volunteers, please contact the WAHS girls’ basketball program via https://westernalbemarlesports.org/main/contact/ .
The “Play for Preemies Showcase” field announcement follows World Prematurity Day, which is observed each year on Nov. 17 to raise awareness of preterm birth and the concerns of preterm babies and their families.
