The Western Albemarle Girls Tennis team defeated defending state champion Abingdon 5-2 Saturday in Class 3 state quarterfinal action at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. With the win, the Warriors advance to the semifinals on Tuesday, when they will host Cave Spring. It is the first state semifinal appearance for the Warriors since 2015, when they lost to Cave Spring in the state championship match.

Jenny Little got the Warriors off to a strong start Saturday, winning handily on Court 6 by a 6-1, 6-1 score over Laken Waugh of Abingdon. The Falcons evened the score at 1-1 on Court 1, as Anna Campbell defeated Western’s Hannah Kearns 6-3, 6-3.

Abingdon took the lead on Court 3, as Annie Miller defeated Western’s Anna O’Shea 6-4, 6-4; the Warriors then evened the match at 2-2 with a Corinne Jennings victory on Court 2. After winning a first set tiebreaker, Jennings held off Abingdon’s Maggie Miller in set 2 to claim a 7-6, 6-4 triumph.

With the team match deadlocked, attention turned to the tight action on Courts 4 and 5, where both matches would ultimately go three sets. On Court 5, Western’s Sarah Inman won a first set tiebreaker over Lauren Goodman, lost the second set, and then built and maintained a third set lead all the way to the finish, closing out a pivotal 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 win that gave the Warriors a lead they would not relinquish.

On Court 4, Western’s Lilly Moore prevailed in a draining three-set match over Abingdon’s Carly Hargroves, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. The victory bumped Western’s lead to 4-2 and meant the Warriors needed to claim but one of three doubles encounters to win the match.

With the lengthy play on Courts 4 and 5, doubles court 1 started before courts 2 and 3. Western’s Kearns and Jennings rallied from a 1-4 deficit in the first set and came from behind again in set two to close out the day’s proceedings with a 6-4, 6-4 victory that accounted for the final 5-2 team score.

The Warriors (17-2) are seeking their first state title since an undefeated season in 2014. In Tuesday’s semifinal round, they will host Cave Spring at 3:00 pm at Western Albemarle. The winner of that match will play for the VHSL Class 3 state championship next Saturday in Salem against the winner of the match between York and James Monroe, which will take place Tuesday at 1:00 in Fredericksburg.

Quotes from Western Head Coach Ellen Markowitz:

“That was a nailbiter!  Abingdon was the state champ last year and we knew it would be intense, and we would need to dig deep. We definitely did that. The girls fought and fought, and we pulled out two huge three-setters at #4 and #5.

“Abingdon are a great team and have been through a lot of tough matches, especially last year on their road to the title. It took everything we had. I’m so happy for Hannah & Corinne to finish it off at #1 doubles. It was fitting that captain Hannah got to clinch the win for us. They played a super match coming back from 1-4 in the first.

“I thought Sarah and Lilly did a great job of staying calm after dropping second sets. Sarah’s opponent was dictating play. She put a lot of pressure on Sarah, who stayed poised and used her experience and maturity to pull through.

“Lilly’s opponent was a gamer and raised her game in the second set. Lilly was down 3-2 in the third, and then dug deeper, got locked in, and won the last four games with offensive shots and few errors. Those wins were huge for us.

“I’m also proud of Jenny’s quick work at 6. She was pumped and ready to go, with big serves and ground strokes.

“Every court matters in these types of matches and it was a total team effort. I am proud of all of them, and excited to have the opportunity to play Cave Spring again.”
