Boys Varsity Indoor Track
The Boy’s Track and Field team won the 3A State Championship at Roanoke College on Friday and Saturday. The battle for the Championship began with five WAHS pole vaulters scoring 27 points on Friday afternoon. Jackson Smith (Sr) won the vault with a height of 14’ 0”, followed by runner up Landon Smith (Sr) at 13’ 0”. The next three WAHS vaulters of Cooper Saunders (Sr), Ricky Weikle (Jr), and Harley Davis (Jr) tied for 5th with a clearance of 11’ 0”. Later on Friday the 4x800 Relay team of Eric Wilson (Jr), Jack Eliason (So), Will Koester (Sr), and Joe Hawkes (So) place 4th in a time of 8:24.52. On Saturday the scoring began with Joe Hawkes and Jack Eliason finishing 3rd and 7th in the 1600 meter run with times of 4:29.48, and 4:37.81. Will Koester added to the scoring with a 3rd place finish in the 1,000 meter run with a time of 2:38.16. The Warriors clinched the title with a 1st, 2nd and 4th place showing in the 3200 meter run. Joe Hawkes won in 9:43.55, Stuart Terrill (So) followed in 9:51.15, and Jack Eliason 4th in 9:57.54. The 4x400 Relay team topped off the scoring with an 8th place finish. The team of Cole Valente (Jr), Will Koester, Connor Pearson (Jr), and Alex Willliamson (Jr) finished in 3:39.66.
A great night of performances was spear headed by the vaulters. The team now has 5 vaulters qualified for the state championship. Jackson and Landon Smith at 13', Ricky Weikle and Harley Davis at 11'6", and Cooper Saunders at 11'0". There were numerous season bests and personal best performances at the meet.
Presently the team also has the following state qualifiers. Connor Pearson in the High Jump, Will Koester in the 1,000 meter, along with Joe Hawkes in the 1600 m and 1,000 m. The team next competes at The Wally Gilbert Invitational and VA Showcase in Lynchburg this coming weekend.
